Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orlando Fire Chief Roderick S. Williams, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jesus Jara, the American Heart Association, Orlando Firefighters, Orange County Fire Rescue, Ocoee Fire Department, Winter Park Fire Rescue, Winter Garden Fire Rescue and Apopka Fire Department hosted a county-wide hands-only CPR training session throughout all high schools and Orange Technical College campuses in Orange County Public Schools.

On Friday, September 29, 2017 nearly 34,000 students were trained in hands-only CPR during their student health course, HOPE, or during Physical Education. Last year, more than 27,000 students were trained. Students trained on CPR mannequins.

Each year, more than 326,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. Bystander CPR can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival if administered before paramedics arrive. For every minute that passes without CPR, a person suffering from cardiac arrest reduces their chances of survival by 10 percent.

Three America Heart Association CPR kits are assigned to each high school, which contain 30 training mannequins. Once trained, students can download the PulsePoint application on their smartphones to be notified of emergencies that need bystander CPR assistance.
